This is an enemies-to-lovers book and I generally love those kinds of books. Dean and Mia were in love in High School until something made them fall extremely out of love to the point of pretty much hatred. It’s been 10 years now and they have to be around each other again.
I like redemption type stories and as a matter of fact I just did a review for one last week for one that I loved. Unfortunately, this one did not work for me as well. Dean was just never redeemed in my eyes. If anything, he went from a douche to a bigger douche as more and more was revealed about their history.
Their was a lot of miscommunication between the main characters which is a plot device that drives me crazy in romances unless done really well. While dating in High School Dean leave Mia hanging at Prom, with her not having any idea what she did wrong. While reading I assumed there was some awful secret that he unearthed about her or that he was trying to ‘save’ her from something (another classic romance plot device) and I was willing to give him a chance… BUT. Then I read what was the ‘issue’. Which was so completely ridiculous that I re-read that part maybe 5 times. I’m still irritated that this was an issue used to cause a breakup and this much strife in a book.
And of course everything could have been solved by a conversation.
So Dean is a douche. Mia needs some spine and to stand up to him. I like my heroes to be nice and my heroines to be stronger.
