This is book 7 in The Holmes Brothers series by Farrah Rochon. I haven’t read all of them – because this author is new to me this year – but I’ve read a few others by her so I was looking forward to it when I got this book. The main reason was because this book is about an established, married, couple! I really loved being able to root for this established couple and watch them fight for their HEA.
So, basically this book opens with Harrison and Willow having been married for a long time with 2 children. They have a seemingly perfect life but they have been living apart for a few weeks at the beginning of this book. I just haven’t read many books with married couples at the center and I loved how this author managed to pull this off. One of the ways that this was done was by utilizing dual POV in such an effortless way here. I really don’t think that this book would have been nearly as effective without it. By using both POVs the readers get to have the insights into both Harrison and Willow and hear both of their insecurities, their fears, and see why exactly their marriage has been off kilter. By doing this the reader can both root for this couple but also be silently screaming NO YOU FOOL, DON’T DO THAT!
I also really enjoyed all the side characters in the book – the family and friends. The children were well developed and added layers to their home life as well as depth to the couple’s relationship. Harrison and Willow head to Italy and this wonderful backdrop serves as another character as well – it’s vibrant and the descriptions virtually leap off the page.
Like I said above – I went into this book without reading the rest of the series and I was completely fine and not confused about anything. I’m sure reading the others would have given me more nuance to the book though, but I enjoyed the story so much I am going to go back and read the rest. There is a scene at the end that was so touching that I cried…if I had had more context I’m pretty sure I would have bawled.
All in all, I loved this HEA for an already married couple and I would love to see more of this type of story being told!
