Dwayne Alexander Smith joins us today for Ten Questions. He is the author of Forty Acres, a story of a young black attorney who is thrown headlong into controversial issues of race and power.
After seeing a couple of friends rave about this book in 2014, I requested it from NetGalley. WOW! What a page turner. Forty Acres is a very unique story about slavery told from a point of view I never considered. The ending though! Whew! I think it left the door open for another book. I’m still waiting for a sequel.
Read this book! I mean it … right now! After you read Mr. Smith’s Ten Questions interview that is.
Ten Questions vol. 2 #14 Dwayne Alexander Smith
Bookish Devices: What is your favorite word?
Dwayne Alexander Smith: Fiasco. It’s fun to say and fun to think about. It’s fun chaos.
BD: What is your least favorite word?
DAS: I don’t have one. Oh, wait… TRUMP. Yeah, that one sucks.
BD: What turns you on creatively, spiritually or emotionally?
DAS: There’s a certain moment, after you’ve been struggling with an idea for days or weeks, when suddenly the solution clicks into place. You know it’s damn good and you can’t wait to get it down on paper. That feeling.
BD: What turns you off?
DAS: Artist with limitless resources who turn out crap. For instance… the movie Batman V. Superman cost 400 million dollars and it’s not even entertaining. That’s criminal.
BD: What sound or noise do you love?
DAS: I like the chittering click of poker chips that fills the air at a poker tournament.
BD: What sound or noise do you hate?
DAS: The constant beep beep beep my stupid fridge makes when I leave the door open for too long. There’s no way to turn it off. Who the hell designed this thing.
BD: If you could have drinks with any author or literary figure, whom would you invite?
DAS: Stephen King. I’ve read more of his books than anyone else and seen tons of his movies. We’d have a lot to talk about.
BD: What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?
DAS: Professional poker. I think I would do very well.
BD: What profession would you not like to do?
DAS: The poor hard working editor who has to edit my raw manuscripts.
BD: What would you choose for your last meal?
DAS: Pizza with pepperoni and extra cheese.
BD: What is your favorite curse word?
DAS: Assclown. Not much of a curse but I love slinging it.
BD: If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and could only bring one book, which would you bring?
DAS: Survive Anywhere by Jame Brookhaven, survival specialist. Duh!
Dwayne, thank you for joining us!
