This author’s voice is so original and I can’t quite find the words to say what I love so much about it. Her books are both cute and touching but this book also dealt with some more heavy aspects in a very deft and even-handed manner that I truly loved.
Your Heart Will Grow is a Queer fantasy book with mermaids with a trans hero. That’s what I mean by original and I loved everything about it. It’s set in the world of The Absolutes – which I had previously read – but I don’t think you need to have that backstory at all to enjoy this book. There are content warning for abusive family members, some violence, slut-shaming, and a few other things, but truly this author dealt with everything with such aplomb that I was extremely impressed. I came to this author from Team Phison (if you haven’t read, you seriously need to because I love that book so much!) and I haven’t been let down by anything they’ve written.
This is my first real mermaid book and now I want more! If you have recs definitely let me know. The scenes under the water with Kelpana’s community were great and now I want more specifically in that part of the world. I enjoyed the side stories and characters and the author addressed the hero being trans in such a great way, very directly without brushing the issue aside.
I can’t wait to read more by this author!
