With each turn of the page I found myself holding my breath.
This story brings a strong scent of fear through Morris Bellamy, an infatuated fan fixated on the disappointment he has with an author who seemingly sold out after his main nonconformist, Jimmy Gold, changed his life from being anti-society to chasing wealth after hitting it big in the advertising business. Morris decided that it was time that he find his virtuoso author, John Rothstein, and take what was rightly his… a bulk of notebooks with what he believed contained the next, never published Jimmy Gold novel. And a mass of cold, hard cash. Because, after all, Bellamy deserves to find out “why?”
When one is obsessed as Bellamy, things go wrong. Never join legions with a psychopath. It will never turn out in your favor. Bellamy assures that no one else can know about his crimes then buries his treasure until it’s safe to uncover, only he isn’t there to retrieve it before someone else finds the cache. As King switches between our ne’er-do-well and the young man who falls upon a seemingly perfect fortune, events take place to show that sometimes a good thing isn’t always what it seems.
I enjoyed how the story weaved between timelines, events in each character’s life, and the personalities who show the reader how deep down inside we’re all imperfect – just in varying degrees. Choices. We all have them. King, as always, wrote his characters in such a descriptive, vivid method that I felt like I know them all intimately. Ergo forgetting to breathe while reading.
The reason I gave this book four stars is because the ending wasn’t what I’m used to in a King ending. It felt a little flat, like air let out of a tire. I heart you, Stephen King, but why was the ending so easy? This will never stop me from picking up the next King book, and it shouldn’t stop you from reading this one. If you want to feel fear, intimidation, and anticipation, pick up Finders Keepers.
