I’ve been dealing with a pretty serious book hangover left from The Goal. I started and deleted at least 4 or 5 books and was desperately looking for a book that wouldn’t let me down. I decided I needed a genre shift and since I generally read a lot of straight up romance a friend suggested The Mother Road by Meghan Quinn as a hilarious romantic comedy. This isn’t something I generally read because humor can be so subjective but this friend and I are pop culture twins so I trusted her. And it was SO GOOD!

This book had a ton of tropes wrapped up into one awesome package. Road trip. Friends to lovers. Brothers best friend. Marley is living in California when her brother, Paul, and father, Bernie, come to visit and they set off on their ultimate family road trip. Paul’s best friend, Porter, joins them and Marley is completely thrown off her game immediately because she’s always had a huge crush on him and they have a history no one else knows about.

I’m not used to a lot of humor in books but scenes in this had me laughing so hard I was crying. My absolute favorite character was the father. Bernie was the stern and loving father that everyone wants. He uses President names instead of curse words, especially when startled. I can’t even describe how much that made me laugh, every single time.

Get the Barack Obama off my GW Bush!

The interaction between the whole family was so great and worked so well for me. Paul and Marley obviously loved each other and got along pretty well but there was also some apparent brotherly and sisterly love going on. Everything about their interactions together cracked me up. Paul was high strung and just a mix of the weirdest personality that was hysterical.

On top of all of the humor and the great family moments there is Marley and Porter, who is at the heart of the book. Porter was a mixture of tough guy and vulnerable that really appealed to me. Their romance is fun and touching to watch unfold and by the end I was completely rooting for them.

This book got me out of my book slump and made me laugh until I cried! What more could I ask for?

There comes a time in a girl’s life when she has to reach deep down into her soul, clear the pathways of her inner goddess, and let out her nuclear Satan.
