My thoughts through the first chapters of The Unkind Hours were something like … This is heartbreaking, Please no!, Is he really?, What is he thinking? The further in I got, my thoughts primarily became What the hell?! I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough during the last few chapters. Well done, Mr. Smith! Well done!
My only complaint and it’s a personal preference and nothing against what the author has done. But the ending left me hanging. If you’ve read many of my reviews, you know I need all the answers spelled out for me. I need it in black and white and don’t want to assume anything. Don’t get me wrong, you have the answers to all the questions, but this ending left me with a sense pending doom. This sense of more to come, but there isn’t anything. Smith did this with his first novel, Forty Acres (which you should read too). I mean it’s a great ending, but I need to know everything is truly okay. Other than that, I was hooked from the beginning and enjoyed every minute of the ride.
