Tips for Living held promise, but the author didn’t hold that promise in her hands tight enough.
Three years after Nora discovered that her husband, Hugh, had gotten another woman pregnant, she feels she’s finally gotten her life back together. That is until Hugh and his new family move into a house nearby and end up shot to death in their home.
It took me five longs days to read this book. There was enough suspense built up about who the killer could be that I kept reading, but it was tough. I wanted to know who the killer was, but found myself finding other things to do besides read because I simply wasn’t gripped by the story.
The one good thing I can say about this book is the who done it surprised me. Once the killer and their motive was revealed (I hadn’t even considered this person) I found the closing of the mystery believable and shocking. However, the journey to the ending was painfully slow at times. Nora plays detective (I hate when an average citizen tries to play cop) and all this other stuff keeps happening in the background. I wanted the meat and potatoes of the story only and was distracted by the other sides.
Overall, an okay addition to the mystery genre, but certainly not ranking among my favorites.
Tips for Living was my Amazon First Reads choice for January 2018.
